How to start freelancing for free

Freelancing provides an exciting opportunity to be your own boss and work on projects you are passionate about. Starting your freelancing journey without any initial investment is possible and also a great way to gain experience and build a portfolio. In this guide, I will outline five practical steps to help you kickstart your freelancing career for free by sharing my experiences as a Freelancer.

1. Identify Your Skills:

Before thinking about How to start freelancing for free, You should Identify your skills and explore the opportunities in your Niche. You might have social media management, Graphic designing, web development, Video Editing, VFX, Copy Writing or any other skill. In My case, I started my journey in Freelancing with Video editing, VFX and gaming. Then I expanded my services.

2. Create an Online Presence:

Having an Online presence is one of the main things to sustain as a Freelancer. Create accounts on freelancing platforms like Fiverr and Upwork. They worked well for me, but you can check out other freelancing platforms like PeoplePerHour and others because they might work for you depending on your niche/skill.
Create accounts on social media and networking platforms like Linkedin, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Behance and Youtube. You can share your work and experience there.

3. Build a Portfolio:

Having a Portfolio is one of the Important things to get a client’s trust because most clients or buyers prefer people with previous experience.
If you have no experience or portfolio, you can offer your service for free or at the lowest rates (if possible).
You can use and leverage your network by letting your friends and colleagues about your freelance services, as word of mouth may help you get your clients.
After working on a handful of projects, you can create a portfolio website using WordPress (if you have some budget) or use Blogspot (free).

4. Take advantage of free online tools and resources:

Initially, when you searched about ”how to start freelancing for free” you might have found various sources explaining this topic. So, you have already started. YouTube is one of the great sources to learn new skills and master existing skills by watching videos of successful persons in your field. I have learned so many things from YouTube.
When I started my journey as a freelancer, I did a lot of research on youtube. You can use free tools like Canva to create images, thumbnails, flyers and more for your business/service.

5. Don’t Give up:

Starting freelancing for free may seem simple, but maintaining a successful career in this field can be difficult. It’s crucial to remember that there may be periods when there are few available projects, which could impact your mental health if you’re unprepared. During this phase, many individuals become disappointed and may contemplate giving up on their freelancing journey. However, it’s important to understand that not giving up is the key to achieving success in freelancing.

Pros and Cons of Freelancing:

Before diving into freelancing or any other field, one should know the pros and cons of that specific field to plan everything accordingly.

I have already written a Blog article about it which you can refer

Expansion:

As a freelancer, it’s important to consider expanding your services and sources of income once you’ve established a good client base. Self-employment has its ups and downs, so it’s crucial to create additional streams of revenue to weather any hard times. Once I had enough clients, I hired people to handle smaller tasks for me, freeing up my time. At the same time, I started exploring other avenues for income, such as trading, investing, affiliate marketing, and blogging. These extra sources of income have been valuable in ensuring my financial stability.

Health is Wealth:

It’s essential to remember that “health is wealth“. Sometimes, people prioritize money over their well-being, which can have negative consequences. To take care of yourself, consider the following tips:

  •  Take frequent breaks: Avoid working for long hours and take regular breaks.
  •  Exercise regularly: Engage in activities like walking, going to the gym, or playing sports to stay fit.
  • Meditate: Meditation can help reduce stress.
  • Choose a good chair to support your back: Sitting for extended periods can cause back problems, so it’s important to choose a comfortable chair
  • Wear blue light blocker glasses: These glasses can reduce the amount of blue light emitted by your screen.
  • Turn on eye protection on your PC, mobile, and tablet.
